Shaolin Chuan

Introduction

Peter Kwok

Ta Jia Li  (Sifu)

Peter Kwok's Shaolin teacher was Han Chin Tung. Wang Zi Ping is another teacher of record.

Three levels of learning :

1.        Mind learns

2.        Mind teaches the body

3.        Body teaches the mind.

It takes 10 years to learn. 3 years for mind to teach body, 7 years to master

Sifu wants us to have a firmer Shaolin foundation for our internal system. To that end, he will teach us

The Four Compulsory Weapons

·         Staff,

·         Spear,

·         Broadsword,

·         Double edge sword.

They are compulsory because each one provides a unique fighting component found nowhere else. This component is dictated by the structure of the weapon. All other weapons are composites of these four.

Form follows function

Understanding the construction of fighting weapons of China and Japan sheds important light on the forms. Susan of Atlanta observed from a fencer's viewpoint why it was important to position sword finger in a certain manner. Fencing has a specific set of weapons, targets and rules. These are the result of an evolution of from the chivalric tradition of Europe. Fencing uses electronic scoring to detect touches from the opponent. So, from a fencer's vantage point, the guards would prevent a touch and thus the loss of a match.

One of the leading world authorities on Japanese swords gave lives in Dade county. He is regarded by Japan as a national treasure. He verifies the authenticity and value of samurai swords. He demonstrated with a cheap ($100,000) sword, some of the qualities of the steel involved. To demonstrate the sword's sharpness, he dropped a silk scarf on the edge and the weight of the silk was enough to cause it to be cut by the edge. To demonstrate the swords strength and durability, he chopped a railroad tie in half. The sword was the Samurai's life.

In fights with these weapons, there weren't the clashes depicted by Hollywood, the swords of the opponents never touched. One person simply lost a limb and life in a single swipe. So the guard as understood by Susan is, in this context, irrelevant.

Story about Indians raiding and stealing a baby from the mother and the midwife. The midwife hunted down the 9 indians, killing 7 with a tomahawk. The tomahawk she used had a razor sharp metal blade.

Military conflicts throughout history have been determined by superior technology. Ghengis Khan defeated all the armies of Europe. No army stood between him from the gates of Vienna to the English channel. The difference was that his troops used cast iron weapons instead of forged weapons. This was possible because of the difference in the bellows used. Mongolian bellows operated from side to side while European bellows operated vertically. Since the Mongolian bellows did not fight gravity, It was able to bring iron to a boil, an advantage of only 15 degrees in temperature. This allowed better swords, spears and arrow heads. The arrow heads were an ounce heavier than those used in Europe. This mass allowed it to penetrate Western armor since that armor was built to defend against the lighter western arrow. Additionally, the Mongolians did not wear metal armor. Their armor was a tightly woven fiber worn in layers over silk underwear. When shot by arrows, the arrow was slowed by the outer garment and was unable to rip the silk, which wrapped the arrowhead in a protective covering, twisted into place by the spin of the arrow. The silk allowed army surgeons to remove the arrows cleanly. Finally, the Mongolian horses maintained their natural gait since the were not shod. They were not burdened by armor or by a heavy Knight. Thus they offered a more agile and more stable platform from which to fight, particularly for horsebound archers. One can see this gait in the wild horse herds on the outer bank islands in the Carolinas.

Military weapons adapt based on practical grounds. Hot water or molten lead cannot be used to defend the walls of a high fortress. The lead turns into pellets of solder and the water loses its heat by the time it falls a few feet. So boiling oil was used because it retains its heat as it falls. Somehow we get to the question of should we, from a martial arts perspective, have dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. Sifu says that you can't be a knife fighter if you never draw your knife. My perspective on it is this: Suppose you are threatened by an invalid. To avenge the insult, you kill his wife and kids. Thats the story on Hiroshima. There's no applicable lesson.

Shaolin Tan Tui - Springing Leg form

This is a foundation form that must be learned. This form covers all of the basics in strikes to accupuncture points. The form has 12 roads. Each road repeats a posture an odd number of times. Each road has an opening and closing posture.

Perform each road 3 times.

Kicks never go above the waist.

Form line runs north and south with opening stance facing west.

Road 1

o        Bow and Arrow start

o        Opening stance, opening position. Look down at left fist, when gaze strikes left fist, open fist to willow leaf palm, drop the hand and circle it overhead until it is above the right shoulder while shifting weight to right foot. Sweep hand to the axilla, vertical punch with right while sweeping left foot to a rooster stance.

o        Look left, step down to a left Tai Chi stance, chamber and left vertical punch to left bow and arrow. Turn in the left toes, bring the left fist to the axilla, fist heart down, horse stance.

o        Look left and block down with left fist past the left knee, turn the toes out, sweep the left fist to shoulder height, arm straight while the right hand back fists in a wheeling motion from underneath, fist horizontal.

o        Rotating on the right elbow, backfist to a block to protect the groin. Think of it a a backfist to your own groin. If your opponent's kick is on target, you will backfist GB 42 and ST 43 or ST 43 and Liver 3. Don't try to block the kick, try to protect the groin. You know where your groin is without even looking, the opponent's foot may be too fast to follow.

o        Turn the left toes out, toe kick right leaving the foot extended. Step down to a Tai Chi stance, chamber and vertical punch to a right bow and arrow. Repeat the sequence on the right and once more on the left.

o        To close road 1, note that you are in a right bow and arrow stance with a right vertical punch. Turn the right toes in 45 degrees while retracting the right fist to the waist. Shift all weight to the right foot, look at the left hand, open the fist to a willow leaf palm, sweep the left hand overhead until it is over the right shoulder. Sweep the left hand to the axilla, sweep the left foot up to a right rooster stance, look right and vertical punch.

Road 2

o        Horse Start

o        Look left, step down in a hooking step to a horse stance, striking with the right palm and pulling the left fist to the waist, heart up. Horizontal punch with the left fist. Chamber the left fist while turning the left toes out 90 degrees and delivering a right horizontal punch to a bow and arrow stance.

o        Turn the left toes out 45 degrees, chamber the right fist while heel kicking with right foot and delivering a horizontal punch with the left.

o        Step down to a horse stance while chambering the left fist and giving a horizontal punch with the right. Repeat the sequence on the right and once more on the left.

o        Turn the right toes out 45 degrees, look left and open the left fist to a willow leaf palm. Watch the palm as it sweeps overhead until it is over the right shoulder. Chamber the right hand and shift all weight to the right foot. Sweep the left hand to the axilla, sweep the left foot to a rooster stance, look right and vertical punch right.

 Road 3

o        Bow and Arrow start

o        Look left. Step down to a Tai Chi Stance, chamber the left fist at the waist, left vertical punch to a left bow and arrow stance facing South.

o        Sweeping left fist overhead, turn to a right bow and arrow stance, pivoting first on left heel and then on the right. While the left fist is sweeping, the right fist drops to thigh level, fist heart facing forward. When left fist passes the left thigh, uppercut with the right. The left hand continues until the left arm and body form a 90 degree angle.

o        The left fist now reverses its sweep as the right hand drops to the right side again. Pivot back to a South facing bow and arrow stance, pivoting first on right heel and then on the left and chopping with the left fist heel to shoulder height. The right fist sweeps up and the right arm is fully extended with fist eye up facing north. At this point, left and right fists are fully extended, 180 degrees apart on the North/South axis of the form line.
