San Cai Jian

Three Power Sword Form

San Sai Jian is a Northern Kung Fu sword form that can be performed solo or with a partner. The partner form is very appealing because it demonstrates many sword techniques and their application to a fighting situation.  

North

Start in opening position, facing west. Heels together, sword held in left hand, blade resting against back of arm, tip up.

Sink to a right Tiger stance and extend the right hand to shoulder height along the form line in secret sword hand. The sword remains in position. Lift the fingers and push with the palm along the form line while shifting to a low left bow and arrow stance. Finish the transition pointing with the sword fingers.

From the left bow and arrow stance, sink back into the right tiger while extending the sword along the form line to shoulder height. Withdraw the sword fingers to the right hip. Fold the sword into the chest while sweeping the right hand palm up to shoulder height along the form line. Fold the right arm with palm up to take over the sword from underneath.

From the left bow and arrow stance, sink back into the right tiger while extending the sword along the form line to shoulder height. Withdraw the sword fingers to the right hip. Fold the sword into the chest while sweeping the right hand palm up to shoulder height along the form line. Fold the right arm with palm up to take over the sword from underneath.

Shift to a left bow and arrow and thrust the sword forward and slightly downward along the form line. The left sword fingers thrust out behind along the form line so that the torso it twisted to the left.

Step forward to a right seated lotus stance and, dropping the butt of the sword, flick the tip to your right shoulder with the left fingers guarding the right wrist.

Step forward left to a bow and arrow stance and thrust the sword behind you along the form line and about 45 degrees above the plane formed by the shoulders. The left sword fingers thrust down and forward in alignment with the sword thrust.

Turn the left toes out and step up to a left inside empty stance while chopping overhead. Guard the right wrist with the left sword fingers. Catch the opponent's sword on the cheek and lead it into the guard.

Change weight to a right inside empty. Step back left, then right, then step the left so that the feet are together in opening stance. Draw the sword hand to the right hip and lift the tip. Sweep the left hand up to a temple block in sword finger.

Lift the left leg, keeping it straight, to waist height. Step out left then, using the momentum from lifting the right knee, skip to a right bow and arrow stance and thrust. The sword fingers point out behind, aligned with the thrust.

Step out right forty five degrees, file the attacking thrust to a right rooster stance. The sword fingers point out behind in alignment with the sword cut.

 

 

 

Drop the right hand in front of the right thigh and left hand to the left thigh. Backhand cut to the head with the upper edge and shift to a right rooster stance while pointing in the opposite direction with the left sword fingers.

 

 

 

Drop to a left tiger stance and cut the opponent's wrist from above by supinating the wrist. Left hand Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

Backhand slash with the sword to the knee of the opponent's extended leg. Sword fingers slash in the opposite direction.

Kick the attacking sword with the right heel as you withdraw the sword to the center. Step down to the right unicorn stance and stab to the opponent's abdomen. The left hand supports the sword thrust.

Step the right foot back, pivot on the left toes and drop to a right tiger stance on the form line. Withdraw the sword, attacking the opponent's wrist while drawing the fist heart to the left shoulder with sword fingers guarding the right wrist.

Remain in the right unicorn stance but drop both hands to waist height, fist heart facing out.

Thrust to a left bow and arrow stance with the sword fingers guarding the right wrist.

Obstruct the thrust by catching it on the sword cheek as you step forward left to a left seated lotus stance.

Twist to a left seated lotus and drop the sword so that they are guard to guard. Step forward right and thrust to a right bow and arrow stance, throwing the opponent back. Left sword fingers thrust out behind

Step back left to a right bow and arrow with sword extended in front and sword fingers extended out behind. Step right, perpendicular to the form line and backhand slash to the opponent's knee. End in a left bow and arrow stance perpendicular to form line with sword fingers extended opposite the sword hand.

Step right to a right high lotus stance and backhand slash with sword to opponent's wrist. Left sword fingers point in opposite direction.

Withdraw the sword so that the fist heart is opposite the left shoulder and sword tip points toward opponent. Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

 

Withdraw the sword so that the fist heart is in front of the right shoulder and the sword tip points to the form line. Left sword fingers guard the right wrist.

 

Step behind with the left foot to a right high lotus stance and gurad with the sword parallel to the left leg. Step right to a right bow and arrow stance parallel to the form line and stab to the opponent's face with left sword fingers guarding the right wrist. Stab is perpendicular to the form line at head height.

Pivot the front toes perpendicular to the form line and shift to a right rooster stance while slashing overhead with the sword, cutting to knee height. As the opponent stabs, shift back to a left empty stance and pluck upwards to attack the wrist from underneath. The sword fingers extend to the rear in line with the sword hand.

Cross step right in front of left to a right lotus stance and wrap the opponent's wrist in a counter-clockwise direction. Sword fingers guard the right wrist. Step left to a horse stance and continue to wrap the wrist.

Step right to a horse stance perpendicular to the form line and wrap the opponent's wrist in a clockwise direction. Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

Cut the opponent's ankles in a backhand direction to horse stance perpendicular to the form line. Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

Sink to a low right empty stance and cover the opponent's sword. Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

Pull the sword free while stepping back to a right tiger stance, bringing the sword to the right shoulder with the back of the hand facing the shoulder.

Lift the sword overhead while shifting to a right rooster with the sword fingers guarding the groin. Step down left and jump kick right then left as you overhead slash with the sword, stepping forward to a right bow and arrow stance..

Keeping the sword tip pointed toward the opponent, step the left foot in front to the right to a left high lotus, step right to a high tiger, step the left foot behind the right foot and pivot to the right lotus stance and thrust forward to file the opponent's wrist with the sword fingers guarding the wrist.

 

Drop the hands to the sides and fade to a right rooster stance. Step right and then left to a right bow and arrow stance at forty five degrees to the form line while slashing diagonally at the opponent's head. Sword fingers guard the right wrist.

 

Withdraw the sword to the abdomen to guard as you step right then across in front left and then shift to a right rooster stance and file the opponent's wrist from above.

Separate the hands and drop the sword to waist height. Step behind left to a right high lotus stance. Step across right to a bow and arrow stance perpendicular to the form line. Stab to the face with the sword pointing along the form line and sword fingers guarding the right wrist.

Out-step down with the left foot and step forward right to a left empty stance as you cut up with the bottom edge and attack the opponents wrist from underneath. Sword fingers and sword form a 90 degree angle.

Cross step right in front of left to a lotus stance and spread arms to evade wrist cut. Pull sword into center and step left. Step right to right bow and arrow and stab to flank with both hands holding sword.

Drop the torso forward and sweep the right foot behind to block the stab. Sweep with the sword to cut the opponent's wrist with the bottom edge. Grasp the sword in both hand and walk the circle, stabbing towards opponent's back

Walk the circle stabbing towards opponent's back. When you have traversed 270 degrees, push the opponent's sword outward as you shift to a left rooster stance. Thrust to a right bow and arrow along the original form line. The sword fingers thrust out behind you.

Step behind right to a left high lotus and cut up from underneath to attack the opponent's wrist.

Remain in a right bow and arrow stance and withdraw the sword with the fist heart in front of the left shoulder and sword fingers guarding the wrist

Step forward to a left empty stance and bring the sword butt to the right thigh. Sword fingers guard the wrist. Step out to a right bow and arrow stance and thrust, the sword fingers extending out behind.

 

Step back right to a left high lotus stance and attack the opponents wrist from underneath with the bottom edge of the sword. Sword fingers point out behind.

 

Remain in a right bow and arrow stance and withdraw the sword with the fist heart in front of the left shoulder and sword fingers guarding the wrist

Step back right to a left high lotus stance and attack the opponents wrist from underneath with the bottom edge of the sword. Sword fingers point out behind.

Remain in a right bow and arrow stance and withdraw the sword with the fist heart in front of the left shoulder and sword fingers guarding the wrist

Step forward to a right bow and arrow stance while reversing the direction of the sword and chopping overhead with sword fingers guarding the wrist.

Block overhead to a left empty stance. Step back to a left bow and arrow stance while chopping overhead at opponent's head.

Step back right,step back left, step feet together and return to ready position with sword flexed at right thigh and sword fingers in temple block.

Take over the sword with the left hand and sink to a right tiger stance, pivoting to be on the form line. Right sword fingers point to the right. The sword blade lies along the back of the left arm.
